ABOUT THIS SONG:
The song “Rock Bottom” was written about the life of John Anthony, who struggling to survive recognized that it was inevitable to continue down a dark troubled path, in High School, through college, and even into what seemed to be a successful career. Drugs & drinking plunged John deeper & deeper into an empty “rock bottom” miserable life, although on the outside everything seemed amazing, the house, the girl, the car. People would try to control him and say there is nothing wrong, you just need to be happy! They would invite him into this surface happy pleasure, but it would only take him down further & leave him more empty in the end. “What is wrong with me?”, he would ask himself, “Why can’t I just be happy??” John needed something much deeper, not the superficial control of “pretend” friends.
John began to try to find answers in people, places, and things, but every door and everything around him proved hopeless. John thought about turning to God, but then would think is his dispair, “If God is real, he certainly doesn’t love me, so why even bother?” But then one day, a man randomly at John’s work, told him about how he went out into the woods & put a gun down his throat, and was going to pull the trigger, but then heard God’s voice. This man said that he put his gun down & turned his life over to God. John amazed, began to seek hearing God, “If God is real I need to hear from him, I must know if God is real & if he cares or not”, John would say.
John walked into a church on an Easter Sunday & heard a pastor say pointing to a worship TV screen in the church, “Don’t you think, that if man can speak to man through a TV, that God can speak to man?” Something changed inside of John, a ray of hope, and he wanted to pursue something bigger than himself. John then went back to that church that same night for an evening service, & that is where John experienced the presence & peace of Jesus, and gave his life from an empty “rock bottom” place, over to God. “God is definitely real” John now says “there is no doubt”, and “God is love, and does love you” he now knows. John will tell you, “Down at ‘rock bottom’ there is only one thing that works, and that is to release & ‘learn to let go’ into the love of God, and then there is only one place to look & one direction to go… Up!”
